A few months back, Kitchen Gardeners International spearheaded a campaign called “Eat the View.” The campaign supports planting an organic food garden on a portion of the White House lawn, with the produce going to the White House kitchen and to local food pantries.
Sound far-fetched? No, no, no, it’s happened before! Scrappy First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt planted a “Victory Garden” on the White House lawn during WWII - in opposition to the US Department of Agriculture, we might add - and was an inspiring example of food and economic self-reliance. Today, the Obamas could add energy conservation, climate change mitigation, and health to the list of benefits a White House garden - and gardens all across the country - could bring.
So here’s the situation:
“Eat the View” is one of many ideas angling for top spot on the websites Change.org and On Day One - platforms of ideas and suggestions for President-elect Obama to tackle when he takes office. That guy seems to get a lot done in a day - rubberstamping a White House garden could be on his list!
UPDATE, March 20, 2009:
WHAT THE?! They really did this! This First Lady is solid.
